What is a Vietnam Visa Extension?
A Vietnam visa extension allows you to legally extend your stay in the country beyond the initial validity period of your current visa. This is important if you want to remain in Vietnam longer than your visa originally permits.
Who can apply for a Vietnam Visa Extension?
Foreigners with valid visas currently residing in Vietnam can generally apply for an extension, excluding those on visa-free entry. However, specific regulations might apply depending on your visa type and nationality.
Updated policy, The Vietnam E-Visa cannot be extended at the moment. The holders of other valid Visas such as: DN1, DN2, LĐ1, LĐ2, TT, NN1, NN2, NN3, … can apply for Visa extension to prolong their stay in Vietnam.
Requirements for Vietnam Visa Extension:
- Valid passport: Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date after the extension.
- Original visa: Your current visa with remaining validity.
- Completed application form: Obtained from the Immigration Department office.
- Two passport-sized photos: As per specified requirements.
- Extension fee: Varies depending on the extension duration and visa type.
- Additional documents: May be required based on your specific situation, such as proof of accommodation, employment letter (for work visa extension), or invitation letter (for certain visa categories), proof of being treated in hospital,…
Important things to know:
- Apply well in advance: Processing times can take up to 7 working days, so it’s crucial to apply before your current visa expires to avoid overstaying.
- Extensions are not guaranteed: The Immigration Department has the discretion to approve or deny your application based on their assessment.
- Limited extensions: The maximum extension duration depends on your initial visa type and may range from 15 days to 6 months.
- Single entry only: Extensions typically do not permit multiple entries and exits from Vietnam.
Alternatives to visa extension:
- Visa renewal: If you require a significantly longer stay, and have not entered Vietnam yet, consider applying for a new visa which has longer validity from your home country instead of an extension.
- Leaving and re-entering Vietnam: For some nationalities with visa-free entry, you might be able to leave Vietnam and re-enter to obtain a fresh visa-free stay; Or leave Vietnam and apply for the new Visa then re-enter Vietnam once it is issued.
You can choose to apply for the Vietnam E-Visa, or Vietnam Visa on arrival.
