2. Types of Vietnam Visa Exemption

Currently, according to the provisions of the immigration law, Vietnam will exempt visas for citizens of some countries with the main forms being bilateral, unilateral, and 5-year visa exemptions.

  • Bilateral agreements: Accordingly, citizens from Southeast Asian (ASEAN) countries will be exempt from visa entry into Vietnam. At the same time, these countries also exempt Vietnamese citizens from visas when entering one of these countries. The bilateral visa exemption period will not exceed 30 days. • Unilateral agreements: Unilateral visa exemption is implemented when only the Vietnamese side waives visas for citizens of other countries. Currently, Vietnam has a visa exemption policy for citizens of 13 countries. The duration will not exceed 15 days.
  • Visa exemption for 5 years: This is the longest form of visa exemption that Vietnam applies. This form is for foreign citizens of Vietnamese origin or who have marriage or blood relations with Vietnamese people. Those citizens will be able to make an application for a 5-year visa exemption and each time they enter Vietnam, they will be exempted from a Vietnam visa for 90 days within 5 years. When the visa exemption period expires, this person has the right to apply for a new Vietnam visa exemption.
