Cơm Lam Tây Bắc – The Quintessence Cuisine of Northwestern Vietnam

Cơm Lam Tây Bắc also known as Tay Bac Bamboo Tube-cooked Rice, is a traditional dish of the northwest region of Vietnam. Cơm lam is a specialty dish of the Northwest region in particular and contributes uniquely to the cuisine of Vietnam in general. If people in other lands cook rice with pots, ethnic minorities in the Northwest use bamboo tubes as ingredients for cooking rice.

History

Cơm lam Tây Bắc is a simple but delicious dish of mountain people, originating from the hard farming life of ancient times. These ethnic people found that the water in the young bamboo tree was fragrant and sweet, so they brought rice with them and put it in this bamboo tube to cook, thereby creating a unique dish that only this northwest region has.

Main ingredient

– Young bamboo tube: fresh and green cover.

– Sticky rice: Sticky rice is milky white, and the grains are round and fragrant.

Mountain people often enjoy cơm lam with sesame salt. While eating it, they can feel the sweet, soft, sticky rice grains mixed with a little saltiness and a little nuttiness from the sesame salt.

In some other places, cơm lam is eaten with grilled chicken or pork.
