Bánh tét mật cật is an attractive specialty in Phu Quoc, this type of cake is wrapped with mật cật leaves. Usually, people only use mật cật leaves to make nón lá but in Phu Quoc, people use these leaves to wrap bánh tét, giving this cake a special flavor.

Specialties

Mật cật is a type of tree with leaves that spread like palm leaves, growing a lot on Ham Ninh Mountain – the highest mountain in Phu Quoc. People dry mật cật leaves to slightly wilt so that the leaves stay tough and don’t tear during the process of wrapping bánh tét. It is then washed and coated with oil to replace the traditional banana leaf wrapping.

The way to wrap bánh tét mật cật is different from other types of bánh tét, this requires people to be skillful and have techniques to make the cake clean, beautiful and delicious.
